Events to get you in the Holiday Spirit

If you are not in the holiday spirit by now, it is time you do something about it. There are lots of cool events in the Bay Area and throughout Wine Country. From watching a lighted boat parade to visiting The Great Dickens Christmas Fair, there is no shortage of seasonal treats for all of your senses. Here are some of our picks for the best holiday events to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Holiday in the Park continues all through December. With new holiday shows and attractions, including a giant snow hill and themed holiday wonderlands with decorated trees, main street festival of lights, and a hill of real snow for sledding. There is also Santa’s workshop and photo op, and larger-than-life candy canes and lollipops. You can even walk through reindeer village and Christmas Tree Forest. There will also be holiday themed killer whale , dolphin and sea lion shows, dancers and carolers to ring in the holiday spirit. For more information, visit www.sixflags.com.

Treat you and your family to this season’s production of the favorite Christmas classic “The Nutcracker” featuring dancer Rasta Thomas. It plays at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts from December 19th through the 21st. Because there is no holiday show quite as nostalgic and memorable as the Nutcracker, we recommend seeing it this season, for the first, or the fifteenth time. For tickets and more information, call (707) 546-3600.

For a truly unique holiday adventure, go see the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade in Downtown Petaluma (Date TBD), a spectacle of decorated lighted boats glide into the Historic Downtown Petaluma harbor at about 6:30 p.m. (view anywhere along the waterfront around the D Street bridge.) Afterwards, enjoy shopping or dinner at one of Petaluma's many nearby shops or restaurants. The lighted boats remain throughout the night and starts at 6 pm. This event is free. For more information, call (707) 769-0429.

If you enjoy holiday crafts and entertainment, visit Telegraph Ave Holiday Street Fair in San Francisco. There you will enjoy more the crafts of more than 200 street artists, merchants, community groups, musicians and entertainers. The festivities take place on Dec. 13-14, 20-21, and 23-24 from 11 am to 6pm. For more information, call (510) 234-1013.

Go to the Cow Palace in Bayview for the Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party. This holiday fair continues thru December 21st and features costumed characters like Oliver Twist and Father Christmas. Enjoy food, live entertainment and crafts from the Victorian era. Admission is $22.00. For more information, visit www.dickensfair.org.

Or visit one of many different tree lighting ceremonies in your area. Local hospices organize a number of Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties. These events are a way for people to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died, but the focus is also on celebrating life. This year in Sonoma, there will be a tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 7 in Petaluma’s Center Park at 7 pm; Dec. 8 at Depot Park in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square at 6 pm; and Oakmont's Star of the Valley Church at 6 pm. Other (non-hospice) tree lightings include Dec. 6 at Windsor at 6:15 pm and Dec. 7 at the Cloverdale Plaza.
