I’ve been trying to get myself to a Slow Food event for several months so when the opportunity to go to the Slow Down on the Delta event came up, I jumped at the chance. Although we probably defied the idea of Slow Food by driving two and half hours to attend the event, the opportunity to visit the Delta and try the area’s local products was one that I could not pass up.
The event was held on a vineyard in Clarksburg and was a benefit for the upcoming Slow Food Nation event in San Francisco that will be held on Labor Day weekend. More on that later. Chefs from various regions in the Sacramento area including Sacramento, Placer, Solano and Davis prepared a delicious local meal of endive salad, homemade ravioli, spring lamb and spit roasted pig. Dessert was a delicious bourbon-cherry tart and homemade ice cream. We also got to sample the wonderful chocolates from Ginger Elizabeth in Sacramento. It’s definitely worth checking out this new chocolatier and her tasty treasures.
Local wines were featured and paired with the meal including Bogle Winery, Heringer Estates, and my personal favorite of the night, a pleasing red blend from Matchbook Winery called Blockhouse. The 2004 vintage is an interesting blend of Syrah, Tempranillo, Malbec and Petite Verdot.
The event was held as a benefit for Slow Food Nation. This will be the first national community event celebrating the principles of Slow Food. The festivities take place in San Francisco on Labor Day weekend and include a tasting pavilion, marketplace, educational seminars and much more. Learn more and find out how you can be involved at www.slowfoodnation.org.
If you are interested in attending a Slow Food event, visit the Slow Food web site to see if there is a local chapter in your area.
